Kickstarter Update #26 - Progress Update, CES, SXSW

Forward: From the desk of the CEO: Hi Kickstarter Backers and welcome to another Freewavz update newsletter! Firstly, let me mention how happy and excited I am to be a part of the Freewavz family. A CEO could not ask for a better opportunity; with the right product and at the right time, we are poised for success! Speaking of success, we have so much to share with you in addition to our most recent award recognition from South by Southwest (SXSW) as a finalist in Innovation Technology, but first and foremost, we need to share some important product and timeline updates for production. After evaluation of the assembly process required to build the CES & SXSW units, and careful consideration with our engineering designers, factory engineers, product planners, and vital feedback from upcoming retail partners, we have decided to change our mechanical design to incorporate an improvement in the molding process of our housing. Without diving into too technical a briefing, we have moved from a “single shot” molding process to a “double shot” molding process. This superior method of bonding different materials together will give us a more environmentally sealed external cabinet. This will allow higher reliability and ultimately achieve what we all want, superior customer satisfaction levels. This was a very tough decision because it required a redesign and new fabrication in our factory machinery, which have impacted our production time tables. That means, including factoring for the impact of Chinese New Year, factory production will move from February to May. Of course we are doing whatever work we can to speed up this process with our partners. While I can recognize that there will be some who will be disappointed with the new timeline, allow me to reassure you all that the resulting product will offer a notable improvement to quality and durability. We are so appreciative of your patience as we work very hard toward production readiness. We continue to work day and night to get the product on your ears as soon as possible. We know you are as invested in us as we are in delivering this product to you. With warmest regards and sincere appreciation, Mike...[click for full article]

Kickstarter Update #27 - Progress Update

As reported in our last update, we initiated a change in our mechanical design for a new molding process to create a better environmental seal. That redesign was completed on schedule and files have been transmitted to our plastics manufacturing for creation of our production molds. At the same time, we have ordered another set of high quality 3D prints for purposes of building 15 additional test sets. We expect to receive those chassis within the next week. From an electrical perspective, we haven’t incurred major changes in the components since we ran prototype boards before our Kickstarter campaign. As reported in the fall, we went through a revision to shrink the board and miniaturize many of the components to accommodate the sleeker design allowed by the custom battery. That led to production of another round of boards in December. We are working on another hardware spin now for minor improvements based on results of integration with our embedded software builds, but it won’t affect our delivery schedule. Our engineering team continues to work tirelessly to deliver the product as quickly as possible and we appreciate their dedication. We are adding engineering resources to supplement that core team and keep us on schedule. We are well into the pulse oximeter capture and analyze testing phase, and we are achieving a high degree of accuracy using medical industry standard test equipment and comparative measurement devices. We have strong data flow from the pulse oximeter all the way through to the app, with excellent pulse rate signal patterns. We continue testing under different conditions and are working on the algorithm to make it more robust based on multiple data sets captured during our on-ear testing. We will further report results in future updates as we expand our testing. We are pleased to announce that Aaron Levin has joined the FreeWavz team as Vice President of Sales & Marketing. Aaron has been a highly valued advisor to FreeWavz for 2+ years and we are glad to have him join us as a full time member of the team. In this role, Aaron will be responsible for business development, branding, sales strategies, product positioning and building out our sales and marketing teams. Aaron brings 17 years of experience in sales and business development in the consumer electronics, video game and software industries. An area we haven’t talked about in our updates is our success in raising the necessary funds that are allowing us to continue to build the business. This has been a continuous process and we have received great support from the investment community who share our enthusiasm over the product and market opportunity. We continue to build our base of “believers” that see the progress we are making in developing this groundbreaking product. We remain obligated to them and to you to build a great product and business.

Kickstarter Update #28 - Progress Update

We are thrilled to announce that FreeWavz has been selected as the winner of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Innovation Award in the category of Wearable Tech. The competition started with over 700 applicants, which was reduced to a list of 70 finalists in 14 categories. FreeWavz was honored to have been chosen from an esteemed list of 5 finalists in Wearable Tech. SXSW presents these awards to honor the best and latest advancements from among a multifaceted and diverse ecosystem of technological achievement. “The Interactive community extends our sincere congratulations to this year’s winners for this esteemed industry accolade and well-deserved recognition,” said Mason Stewart, SXSW Interactive Innovation Awards Coordinator. Testing of pulse rates and oxygen saturation using standard medical industry test equipment is going well, showing either spot on or within 1-2 bpm (beats per minute). On-ear testing is showing similar results with increasing consistency, as shown below by the reading on the FreeWavz app compared to a standard hospital ear-clip pulse oximeter...[click for full update]

FreeWavz Combine Smart Headphone with a Fitness Tracker - Wearable UK

Two distinct forms of wearable tech that are making some real waves at the moment are fitness trackers and smart headphones. You’ll no doubt have begun to see people wearing devices like the FitBit or a FuelBand out and about—wearable fitness monitors have made it to the mainstream, and many of the biggest tech companies around are now having to play catch-up to get in on the emerging marketplace. Similarly, smart headphones look like a product that’s just on the verge of that sort of success. Consumers have proven that they’re willing to pay a premium for headphones with the rise of brands like Beats by Dr. Dre, and the first few forays into making headphones ‘smart’ seem to have found a receptive audience. However, the method of making a pair of headphones ‘smart’ is rather complicated—what sort of functionality is really going to improve the product and the way that it’s used? That questions seems to have been answered by FreeWavz, a new product that combines smart headphones with fitness tracking software.

As an avid weightlighter, Dr. Eric Hensen knows how annoying earbuds can be at the gym. Hensen, who is also an ear, nose, and throat doctor, watched as the tiny headphones slipped out of sweaty ears and got tangled in machines. For athletes and gym buffs, traditional earbuds just aren't cutting it. So Hensen decided to reinvent them. Hensen says he wanted to design a safer and more comfortable earphone for athletes that would fit snugly and comfortably in the ear and work without tangling wires. He took a look at current listening device design and ultimately came up with a prototype for the FreeWavz headphones, which connect to an audio source via Bluetooth and are designed to stay in the ear even through rigorous exercise...

"FreeWavz looking to add heartbeat monitor to wireless earbuds" -Network World

At last week’s Wearable Tech Expo in New York, I was able to sit down with Harry Ericson, president of hEar Gear, Inc., which is crowd funding its FreeWavz earbuds through Kickstarter (they’re currently looking for funding through Aug. 7). Having just recently tested some other Bluetooth-enabled fitness-themed earbuds (including the Plantronics BackBeat FIT and Blue Ant Wireless Pump HD Sportbuds), I wanted to see how FreeWavz is approaching the space...
